Looking in the mirror ought to be positive experience, or at least somewhat pleasant. But when your reflection in the morning is more “goblin” than GQ, you can feel self-conscious. If you have dark under eye circles, you can wind up looking old and tired, and no matter how good-looking you may otherwise be, those dark circles are like black clouds ruining your complexion.
You can give in and go about life looking this way, but when your friends look bright-eyed and bushy-tailed while you look like you just came out of hibernation, you’ll want to do something about it. And it’s not something “only women care about” either. Guys want to look good too, and when under eye circles are the root of insecurity, it’s time to take charge and show those circles who’s boss.
Why The Dark Circles?
There are many reasons men may get under eye circles. For some, it’s genetic. Damn, dad. Age is also a factor, causing collagen to deplete, and we can’t stop the clock. Ladies have it a bit easier when they grab the under eye concealer to cover up their dark circles, but the majority of guys aren’t shopping for Maybelline. That said, if you’re into makeup, slap some on and call it a day. Maybe you’re “born with it” too.
Are you sleeping enough? Tiredness from lack of sleep can lead to these dark circles. You need that beauty rest to have a fresh-faced look without those telltale signs that you’ve been up all night texting. Your body needs rest, for healing and health. Be sure to give yourself at least seven to eight hours of sleep per night, and you may just see those dark circles fade away.
Allergies cause more than sniffles and sneezing. When you have specific allergies, your body releases histamines, which can cause puffiness, swelling, and inflammation. This can be noticeable on the face especially, causing the under eye area to appear more sunken. Blood vessels may become more pronounced in this area too, leading to a darker hue and discoloration.
Sun worshipers are susceptible to seeing circles. You may love that golden glow, but hyperpigmentation changes from those rays can make sensitive skin, like the thinner skin under the eyes, stand out. Your tan will not only be uneven, but also make your dark circle stand out. Plus, skin health is essential. Don’t be the male version of “Tan Mom.” Those are 15 minutes of fame nobody wants to see.
How To Get Rid Of Dark Circles
Along with the aforementioned makeup hack, there are some ways to fix your face without having to hide behind a pair of dark sunglasses.
If allergies are to blame, see your doctor or dermatologist. They may prescribe something to solve the problem, or suggest a moisturizer to care for your skin. Some types of eye creams and eye gels contain Vitamin A, Vitamin C, retinol, hyaluronic acid, and even caffeine, which not only moisturize, but make the area more supple.
You may even want to go for DIY home remedies, like placing cold cucumber slices over your eyes or soaked cooled tea bags or a cold compress to get rid of dark circles. The anti-inflammatory effects work wonders.
Do your best to not get too much sun and wear a high SPF sunscreen when you are outdoors, get 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night, and don’t rub your eyes. Remember, the under eye skin is super thin. All those fine lines are living proof.
